In 1987, Star Wars became an international sci-fi phenomenon and spawned a diehard fandom which persists till today. Something which is this legendary becomes ripe for parody and Mel Brooks had demonstrated this when he had created a Star Wars spoof, Space Balls.
The release of the Solo: A Star Wars Story trailer was no exception to light-hearted imitation in the style of Brooks’ 80s parody. The footage shows Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian), Emilia Clarke’s Q’ira and Woody Harrelson’s Beckett.
A fan-made trailer had mashed up the footage from Spaceballs with the audio in Solo and made both the franchises come a full circle in a pretty funny way.
Created by YouTuber, Darth Blender, Bill Pullman’s Lone Starr plays Han Solo and is traveling the universe in a space Winnebago with Mog (Half-Man, Half-Dog) friend, Barf (John Candy).
The trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story was marketed as an origin story for the fan-favorite galactic smuggler. Writer, Lawrence Kasdan had said that the Coen Brothers classic, The Big Lebowski inspires the movie’s tone:
“[Solo] has that flavor of a crime world that has weirdness and surprise and people stumbling into things — and other people very intentionally getting into [trouble],” Kasdan had said.
“The Big Lebowski is a great example because Solo has a more off-kilter tone than you’ve ever seen in Star Wars,” he then added.
Mel Brooks was in talks of reviving Spaceballs with a sequel in May 2017. The Star Wars sequels are to be thanked for the latest news.
Solo: A Star Wars Story will release on May 25th, 2018.
