When the new rebooted Ghostbusters released in 2016, it wasn’t the hit Sony expected it to be.But according to Ivan Reitman, who directed the original two movies and produced the recent all-female reboot, the next Ghostbusters film is scheduled to release in 2019. He maintains that the franchise is moving at a healthy pace despite the disappointing box office record.
Reitman confirmed this to fans at the San Diego Comic-Con during a Ghostbusters. He also said he was overseeing the development of both live-action and animated films.
The original Ghostbusters film was a sleeper hit when it released in cinemas in June 1984. 2019 will mark the 35-year anniversary of the original horror-comedy hit, and when asked if there were any celebrations planned, Reitman said a movie was being planned in honor of the occasion.
“Well, the studio is working on some nice things. First of all, I can’t believe the movie is still playing and being watched so assiduously… and I can’t believe I’m so old. Yeah, I think there’s going to be a lot of fun, a lot of special things. We’re going to try to tie one of our films close to that date.”
Reitman believes that Ghostbusters is too big a franchise to be sidelined by one small speedbump. He claims that “many” more Ghostbuster movies are being developed.
While Reitman had praised the cast and creators of the 2016 reboot, Dan Aykroyd criticised the rebooted version and its director. He did not confirm whether the planned 2019 movie would be animated, or live-action neither did he confirm whether the 2016 cast of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones would return. Assuming the movie is being planned for release in 2019 we won’t have to wait much longer to find out.
